Empowered to Make an Impact

At times the unmet needs and problems of the world seem insurmountable. But what would you say if I told you that you can help with one small piece of paper? That with one small action you can pour kindness and love into the world and possibly change the course of someone’s life forever? You can, and we’ll get to that in a minute.
In August, Hampden Elementary School art teacher Amy Kovach asked her students a similar question:
“What would you say if I told you that you can help an entire homeless family get a home of their own with a small piece of paper?”
And with that question, she empowered 660 children to help by creating bold, colorful works of art that will be part of the “Art From the Heart Art Auction” to benefit Family Promise of the Capital Region on Friday, November 10, 2017 at the Holland Union Building at Dickinson College.
Kovach first heard about the auction last fall. There wasn’t time to include a project in her curriculum at the time, but she carried the idea into her planning for the 2017-18 school year. Working with the Hampden Elementary PTO for donations of supplies, Kovach provided a unique theme for every grade.
While working on the project, Hampden students learned that there are families right around them who don’t have places of their own to live. That there are students who leave school without a home to go to. Who have nowhere to do their schoolwork, eat dinner, take a bath, or sleep.
And the Hampden students were eager to help with creations from their own hands—doodles, animals, plants, things that fly, hands and hearts. Their individual artwork came together on canvas to create whimsical, vibrant, and powerful pieces. The six completed works, two for first grade and one for grades two, three, four and five each, are large—ranging from 20” x 24” to 4’ x4’. They are innocent and beautiful. But most importantly, they represent 1,320 little hands powered by 660 enormous hearts, each doing one small thing that would come together to make life better for someone else in the world.
And that is the lesson these students will carry for their lifetimes. They are not helpless. With small actions, working together they can make a positive impact.
The works of those 660 little artists, along with donations from galleries and dozens of accomplished adult artists from around the region, will be available at “Art From the Heart.” The annual event raises money to benefit Family Promise Harrisburg Capital Region with its mission to empower homeless families as they learn the skills and build relationships to move from homelessness to home.
And that’s where you can be empowered to help, too, with one small piece of paper—your ticket! Art from the Heart is a fun evening with wine and heavy hors d’eouvres. There’s even live music provided by the Sounds of Healing from Cumberland Valley High School.
We invite you to help an entire homeless family move from homelessness to home with a small piece of paper. Call or email today!
Tickets are $30 per person and available through November 6 by calling 717.737.1100 or email: email@example.com
