What is New at Family Promise?

A New Hope

One of the participants who was provided Wheels UP funding for a car has been building her credit for over a year, working hard and making better choices for herself and for her family. ZJ is working full-time and providing for her family in a way she couldn’t before!

ZJ even provided dinner for our FPHCR shelter families to give back!

A New Start

This month, our Family Promise family had the bittersweet pleasure of helping one of our longest residing families move into a place they can call home. Ashley and her children, Tony and Chubbers, moved into a beautiful 2-bedroom apartment in the Brethren Housing Association’s transitional program and are so excited for this next phase of their lives!

Last week Ashley reached out to us to give an update and to tell us how much she missed everyone at Family Promise. She expressed her deep appreciation to the staff and volunteers at Family Promise HCR, saying, “Thank you guys for everything you have done for my family, idk [I don't know] where we would be without you guys! I am going to miss seeing every single one of you every day, and I am positive Chubbers will too! 🖤"

According to Ashley, “I was just used to having you guys around & felt like I had belonged somewhere for the first time in a while... It’s been a transition for us to be sure! But Tony is loving life with his own room…(and) My dog is coming tomorrow…”.

A New Way to Volunteer

I’ve always felt that people genuinely want to help, but they don’t know exactly how, or they have a lot of time constraints that make it difficult.

That's why we started our support volunteer program, and the response has been over-whelming! We’ve had about 65 folks sign up to help with various Family Promise tasks. Here's how it works:

  • About twice a month I send out an email about opportunities for volunteering.

  • If it’s something that someone can step in and take care of, they do!

  • If it doesn't fit for right now, they can just ignore the email. (It's okay, I’m not offended! It's low pressure.)

People simply sign-up to do what they enjoy doing, when they are able to do it.

It’s been wonderful to see this list grow and to have the support of so many people to:

  • Help our Day Center run smoothly, stay organized, and look good

  • Provide meals for our families

  • Transport families to and from host sites

If you are interested in joining our support volunteer team, just contact me at susan@familypromisehcr.org.
